Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba
Cordoba, Spain
Yes, you read that correctly - "Mosque-Cathedral" and yes, the Mezquita-Cathedral of Córdoba is a most remarkable building: A Christian church built right in the middle of a mosque!
It was originally a Catholic Christian church built by the Visigoths but was later converted to an Islamic mosque in the Middle Ages. After the "Reconquista" it returned to being a Roman Catholic church. However, the Islamic architecture was allowed to stand and the cathedral was constructed in the centre of what had formerly been the mosque. You can not prepare yourself for the vast area of Islamic columns, row after row. (I wasn't able to capture this well, it was too dim for my camera.)
The Patio de Los Naranjos is the large outer courtyard.
